Cellular communications has been through major evolutions once about roughly 10 years. 2G GSM, designed and deployed in the 90's, was the first globally deployed cellular communication system specifically designed to carry voice communication. 3G WCDMA, designed and deployed in the 2000's, was the CDMA based cellular communication system, allowing capacity optimizations not possible before. 3G WCDMA system was primarily designed for voice communication but had significantly improved data capabilities. 4G LTE, designed and deployed in the 2010's, was the first data centric OFDMA based communication system. In 4G LTE, even voice was carried as VoIP data packets using VoLTE technology. 5G NR, designed for the 2020's, is the current generation of cellular communication builds on top of data centric design of LTE but introduces major enhancements to address different verticals such as Time Sensitive Communication and Industrial IoT. 5G NR also standardizes non-communication related aspects such as precise time distribution and positioning.
