Title

System of Systems: Multi-dimensional Classification and Challenges

Abstract

Abstract

As engineering and technology domains evolve, the concept of a System of Systems (SoS) has emerged as a critical framework for understanding large-scale, heterogeneous integrations of independently managed systems. Despite its growing importance in domains such as defense, transportation, healthcare, and smart infrastructure, the characterization and classification of SoS remain complex and often ambiguous.

This seminar explores the need for a multi-dimensional framework to better describe and categorize Systems of Systems, addressing the inherent diversity and complexity of their interactions. Through this lens, we examine how differing perspectives reveal distinct properties and dependencies within SoS architectures. The discussion also highlights the broader challenges faced by SoS, including those related to their evolution, management, and operation across diverse contexts.

Participants will gain insights into emerging frameworks, practical classification methods, and ongoing research directions aimed at advancing a unified understanding of SoS complexity.
